Radio Zapote

Radio Zapote is a pirate radio station broadcasting out of ENAH, the School of Anthropology and History. This station started when the Zapatista Caravan came into Mexico City to confront Presidente Fox and the Mexican civil society about the situation in Chiapas. Well, where did the thousands of Zapatistas and companeros stay when they got to Mexico City? At ENAH! So students and community members started Radio Zapote in solidarity with them. After the caravan left, they thought to themselves, "Hey, let's keep this station going!" And so, they've been broadcasting for over 3 years now inside the school, on 94.1fm and the internet.

Last year, some people from different radio collectives in the States formed the Critical Mass Radio Network, which coordinates a one day broadcast around the country every last friday of the month. Naturally, we want to get more stations involved from not only the U.S., but around the world. And Radio Zapote in Mexico City is one of those stations.

So, I went down there last night, and guess what. The fucking administration is threatening to evict them in 2 weeks! As I was there, I got to interview a dj from the station about the situation, the community, the student/teacher support and more. Fortunately, I happened to be right there when the radio collective was about to go into the Director of the University's office and tell him "We ain't leaving! Sorry." I was named an "international journalist," and I recorded the entire meeting, which went pretty well. After it's edited, I'll post it to IMC radio network with a story.

The relationshop between students and their university is incredible here. Its like nothing I've evern experienced in the states. Autonomous pirate radio stations inside public universities, national revolutionaries staying inside the school, large occupied auditoriums. Seems like the students here actually use their critical knowledge to create events and structures that challenge the accepted forms of representation.

You are right about the special kind of relationship students in Mexico have with their schools. After all, the reason why I moved to SD was because a student strike protesting against an administration plan to start charging student fees shut down the entire UNAM for almost a year.
The students occupied the buildings and formed a General Strike Council where reps from every school made decisions (meetings lasted for hours). Cops and hired pinkertons would try to retake the buildings, but students defended them for months and started a few coops inside.
Looking back, I think that was extraordinary. I wish something like that could be replicated in the States. Of course, politicians complain than Universities are too "politicized."
I guess a big element on that is that in Mexico there's a wider variety of ideologies represented in politics and in classrooms. There is a bit less ideological control than in the States. Several Socialist parties are in the ballots, you can find Das Kapital in any Mexican Wal Mart, and even in Government-sponsored book fairs..!
There is a lot of repression too, but at least you can talk about competing ideologies to capitalism in a serious manner, without being demonized as a traitor, spy, or radical.
I'm enjoying your postings, keep 'em coming hermano!
